Educational Hands-on LEGO® Building Exhibits

Exhibit: The STEWART J CORT

The STEWART J CORT, put into service in 1972, was the first 1000-foot freighter on the Great Lakes, and is still in service to this day.  The CORT was built in an interesting modular manner, and this technique is replicated in this LEGO® scale model of the ship.  When fully assembled, the ship is more than nine feet long.  It can be effortlessly disassembled and re-assembled as needed, making it easily transportable.  The presentation of this project is accompanied by a computer-based multimedia presentation and printed materials.

Hands-on opportunities with this project include building the segments of the cargo hold (90% of the ship's length) and assisting in the final assembly of the cargo hold, bow and stern.

Learning opportunities with this project include Great Lakes regional history and the mathematics of scale modeling.  Tie-ins can also be made to the science of steel manufacturing, as this ship is a regular hauler of iron ore from Minnesota to steel mills in Indiana.  This project coincides with the 150th anniversary of the Soo Locks, which occured Summer, 2005.
