About Bricks For Brains
Our mission statement:
Bricks for Brains designs and offers services and products that provide educational opportunities for youth in the areas of engineering, science and mathematics through guided, hands-on building projects using LEGO products.
Bricks for Brains was founded in 2005 by Duane Collicott, a lover of both LEGO and education.
Mr. Collicott played with LEGO as a child, and re-discovered the toy when he had children of his own,
retrieving the old box of LEGO from his parent's basement.
After noticing how his own children took to the toy and experienced their own disccovery and creative
building, Mr. Collicott saw that LEGO products could also be a medium through which children could be
easily led into learning about simple spatial concepts as well as more advanced concepts. Unlike many other
toys and electronic gaming products, play with LEGO products demand a creative, open-ended style of play,
where children confront
a pile of random parts, conceive an end result, and then figure out how which combination of parts will
take them to their goal. On the way, they will pass through several cycles of experiementation, evaluation,
redesign, and reconstruction, eventually ending up with the object they had originally envisioned.
We provide both free-building and guided experiences. Our predesigned projects are
meant to teach a particular concept, such as the engineering principles of bridges or the relative motion of
gear sets. We and also develop projects by request to meet other goals.
